Welcome to Fairbanks!
Once a gold rush boomtown, Fairbanks has grown to become Alaska’s second largest
metropolis known as the “Golden Heart City,” a testimony to the warmth of its people.
The Alaska Highway, trans-Alaska oil pipeline, military bases, mining and the University of
Alaska are all integral to Fairbanks’ past and future. Located in the Interior region of
Alaska, Fairbanks serves as home to a population of approximately 32,000, with nearly
98,000 living in the Fairbanks North Star Borough—an area the size of New Jersey.

What to Wear
The weather in Fairbanks is perfect for warm, casual wear. Residents of Fairbanks, like most of Alaska, dress for convenience, not for style. A sweater and nice jeans or slacks is perfect for just about anywhere.
As a bit of outdoor walking will be involved for a few conference sessions, as well as taking advantage of nearby restaurants, it will be important for those not used to the cold weather to prepare accordingly. On an Alaskan winter day, the key to comfort is wearing layers of clothing that you can peel on or off as needed. In March, it is a good idea to bring heavier layers, a warm hat and gloves, consider insulated shoes or warm socks and avoid high heels when walking on ice. If taking advantage of the area's many outdoor activities, long underwear and warm boots will also make your adventures more enjoyable. With all of this you will be prepared for any Alaskan outing.
The Westmark Fairbanks Hotel has a fitness room, so bring workout clothes as well
if you plan to use that amenity.
A Photographer's Dream
Situated within a ring-shaped region around the North Pole called the "aurora oval,"
Fairbanks is one of the best places on earth for experiencing the beautiful and
mysterious northern lights. Bright, energetic curtains of yellow, green, red or even
purple light brighten the night skies regularly. Prime viewing time is late evening
through the wee hours of the morning, while skies are clear and dark. It is said that
if you stay three winter nights in Fairbanks, you have an 80% chance of seeing the
northern lights. So, don't forget your camera!
